History

The school was founded by Roger Liddle in 1997. Roger Liddle has been an English teacher for more than 35 years, and has worked for companies and governments all over the world. When he arrived in the Netherlands he started working at the British School in The Hague. He soon realised that there was a growing need for quality English teaching in Rotterdam and so, following his instincts, he moved to Rotterdam to start the Centre for British English.

Roger, starting with only 1 teacher and 11 students per semester, had a vision for the Centre. He wanted to create a school of which he could say “I would like to work there”. He didn’t want to be a businessman running a school, instead, he wanted to be a teacher running a school. With these ideals he hired likeminded teachers and has created a pleasant and dynamic working environment. Along with the influx of professionalism through the teachers and his leadership skills, Roger has managed to make the CBE a prominent name in Rotterdam.

Now, the school runs at maximum capacity, having 240 students per semester on its own premises and an extensive portfolio of companies for which CBE has provided in-company courses. The CBE has developed from being a language centre to a centre with a wide variety of services related to English.

The CBE is now on the brink of a period of dynamic expansion. Roger, though
still very much a presence in the CBE, is handing over the running of the school to
Emma Gill. Emma has been a teacher with CBE for several years, and has
the enthusiasm, the dynamism and the energy to take the CBE to its next level.
The coming years, with Emma at the helm, will see the CBE even more firmly
established as the leading English language school in Rotterdam, and one of the
best in the country.
